Digital Calibur - Logo Design Concept

Digital Calibur is a startup IT consulting firm based in Los Angeles, California. Part of their initial branding phase is to develop a logo.

Originally, they had the idea of using a realistic 3-dimensional bullet as their logo, but after a few days and several sketches and iterations, we've decided to go with the digital cross hair design. This is still a work in progress, but the concept is finalized. We've come up with this design, using the cross hair itself to render the "D" and "C" in the company name.

Coming soon: a finalized logo and website design!

Benito's Taco Shop - Website Design Concept

Benito's, labeled as "LA's original taco shop," is expanding. Along with opening new restaurants in Santa Monica, CA and Hollywood, CA, they are rebranding the company.

Here is a sneak peak at one of the concepts for the homepage.

Hopie's Website - More Revisions!

We're kicking off the new year with a bang. We've revised Hopie's website design concept per her comments.

I do love bright colors, but in a Grace Jones, Kanye West, MIA way. Bursts of neon colors, grounded by whites and blacks, jagged or rough looking, artsy. Too many bright colors or some color combinations might come out more Nick Minaj or FAO Schwartz. I like bright colors, but not too bubble gummy/toy store-like.

Inspiration from her color scheme hails from music videos similar to Rihanna's "Rude Boy" and "Only Girl (In The World)", along with Miami Horror's "I Look To You". Read more »

Hopie's Website Redesign - Revisions

Although we haven't posted an update, we've still been working with Hopie on the new design for her website! Here is a new sneak preview of the design. The revisions are based on Hopie's comments, posted below.

  • I like the layout a lot.
  • Love the big billboard "buy this ablum" window.
  • Love the events box placement, love the sidebar placement, love the layout of the footer.
  • Maybe the logo at the top to either the left of right of the top bar?
  • Can we still incorporate the old diamond logo somewhere in the design? It was personally made for me by a famous graffiti artist, so am still in love with it.
  • Not very excited about how the photos are positioned or cropped. Just seems like a weird way to place those photos. I feel like i lost the feel of the photos.
  • Maybe a speech bubble?
  • Am not too excited about the mosaic of pastel purple tiles. I don't really like pastel colors. I like black and white mixed with electric colors. Also love textures, like grains and fibers, etc.

Stay tuned for an updated color palette based on suggestions by Hopie.

Apple Wins War With Flash - Stop Asking Your Web Designers to Use Flash

Apple

It's finally settled. Stop asking your web designers to use Flash. The battle between Apple and Adobe to support Flash has finally ended. The death of Flash websites is inevitable. With the continued growth spurt of tablet computers (e.g. Apple's iPad) and the increased number web users on mobile devices, more and more Flash websites are rendering to be useless.

Adobe has announced that rather than pushing Flash onto mobile devices and tablet computers, they will proceed in to go with the grains (Apple, Google, Microsoft) to support HTML5 as a web standard for mobile devices and tablet computers.

"My primary insight when we were screwed by Adobe in 1999 was that we shouldn't get into any business where we didn't control both the hardware and the software, otherwise we'd get our heads handed to us," Mr. Jobs said, according to the book.

While Flash still has its uses, such as games and streaming video (for the time being), HTML5 will handle many of the bells and whistles that so many clients desire for their websites. Read more »

Hopie Spitshard - Website Redesign

Way back in 2008, Klucid designed and developed Hopie Spitshard's original website (built on Drupal 5). Three albums and nearly four years later, Hopie has grown immensely as an artist, thus requiring a website overhaul. Not only are we redesigning the front end to match her new image and musical style, we are also upgrading her Drupal installation so that it is up to par for the new year.

Check out the initial concept for the new design above. Stay tuned as we share the design process with our readers and publish each step of designing a website from scratch - no templates! Follow along as we interpret comments and suggestions from Hopie into the new design.
